Jonas family divorce: Relocation in the news
Yet another celebrity divorce is making headlines in 2023. Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner are calling it quits.
It was reported yesterday Mr. Jonas (Petitioner) left a mediator after 10 hours on-site. Who’s to say that time was constructive? Based on mediation confidentiality rules, (hopefully) we’ll never know.
Recently the Kevin Costner divorce made our blog, and, unlike that Hollywood headliner dissolution, Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner have made the blog “thanks” to residential complications when figuring out a parenting plan. Although, similarly to Costner and Baumgartner, money is likely at stake here too.
Back to the point.
Ms. Turner is from the United Kingdom, Mr.Jonas, the United States. In their four years of marriage, their post-pandemic travel plans have been aplenty. Since Ms. Turner claims she first heard of their divorce via the media (I call “bologna” on that one), she says Mr. Jonas is withholding their two children’s passports, preventing her from bringing their girls back to the U.K.
Clients are asking, “can my ex really prevent my children from traveling home?”
The family law bench would say, “define ‘home’”.
For starters, Joe and Sophie’s children, Willa (3) and Delphine (1) are very young. If they were older, established in schools and community activities, this would likely be less of an issue. Alas, it is.
Ms. Turner says she and Mr. Jonas were building their “forever home” in the U.K. before divorce proceedings began. Mr. Jonas says, not so fast. He filed for divorce in Florida, the correct jurisdiction he notes, because they own a home in Miami.
Now that mediation has begun (quickly, by most standards, as the marriage dissolution was just filed last month), Ms. Turner seems committed to be in the States to work out her next steps, and has dropped her motion regarding the passports. These headlines underscore the need for a family transition team to support you, and your family, through the challenge. A lot of scenarios can play out in divorce, and your team should be working with you to create the best possible outcome for you, and your family.
